Nubra Valley is located in the northern part of Ladakh region, about 150 kms away from Leh. It is home to the world’s highest motorable road, Khardung La Pass (5602 m), which is a great feat for adventurous travellers. It takes around two hours drive to reach the top of Khardung La Pass from Nubra Valley.
The valley is also known for its vast stretch of sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels that graze in the altitude sand. From Nubra valley, travellers can take a day trip to climb Khardung La Pass and discover one of the world’s highest motorable roads and get spectacular views of snow covered mountains. All these attractions make it an ideal destination for tourists who love adventure and nature.
Nubra Valley is a secluded valley nestled in the north of Jammu and Kashmir in the mighty Karakoram mountain range. It is about 93 miles or 150 kilometers from Leh and is known as the northernmost part of India.
The valley is full of pristine natural beauty, numerous pretty villages, ancient monasteries, stunning lakes, lovely surroundings, apricot orchards and scenic vistas. It can be accessed through Khardung La mountain pass which lies at a height of 5602 m above sea level. One can also enjoy camel safaris in the desert area of Hunder, where Bactrian camels can be found in abundance. The valley also offers plenty of other activities like trekking and fishing.
The Nubra Valley is the home to Diskit Monastery, which is the main headquarters of the valley. The 350 year old monastery is situated in Diskit village and is the largest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh. The main village of Nubra Valley is also located in Diskit and boasts many apricot plantations. The valley has two sub districts; one being Hundar and other Sumur. The main towns of the valley are Turtuk, Hundar and Sumur. Siachan River runs through this valley on its North East side, making it picturesque with its orchards and small homes along its banks.
Nubra Valley is located in the North of Ladakh, and is one of the major tourist attractions for anyone visiting the region. It lies in the Shyok River basin at an average altitude of 10,000 feet and is surrounded by rugged mountains. It is a cold desert with two-humped Bactrian camels as its major attraction. The valley also has some hot water springs where one can experience a warm bath after trekking through the cold desert! The small village of Panamik, which is around 150 mtrs from Hunder, also has a monastery that makes it an ideal place to stay during your Ladakh trip. The main villages in the Nubra Valley are Diskit, Hunder and Sumur and each offer unique mountain scenery that one can enjoy while trekking or sightseeing.
Nubra Valley is a host to the two-humped Bactrian camels, which are seen roaming in the sand dunes. It is also known as a cold desert due to its dune-like landscape and rare precipitation. It is situated in close proximity to the Siachen River and Indus River, which meet at the Shyok River. Nubra Valley was once an important trading route on the Silk Route that connects Leh, Ladakh with Central Asia. The Nubra River flows through it and joins the Shyok River at its foot, making it a tributary of this river. Flowers of different varieties are found blooming here in summertime, making Nubra Valley even more beautiful.
